The Story of Armani

Art, medicine, literature – the questions of life of a young and multi-talented man: Giorgio Armani. He was naturally good at so many things that his true destiny only revealed itself to him after a few detours.

Growing up in Piacenza, Italy in the 1930s, Armani had a humble childhood. He went to a local public school and did not hail from a fashion family background. Middle-child Armani loved theatre and cinema – his first exposure to the thrill of costume and fashion. He was not sure what he wanted to do in life, but he had a strong interest in the human body, so at first he decided to be a doctor. After three years studying medicine in Milan he was working as a military medic in a Verona hospital.

Armani’s interest in bodily aesthetic developed into sketching people, and designing clothes for them to wear. He turned out to be a talented artist with a flair for design, so, he left the army with fashion on his mind. He started as a Milan department store window-dresser and buyer. and later on he began designing menswear and made such a success of it that he was shortly in high demand as a freelance designer for many manufacturers. He opened his own design office and soon afterward, in 1975 he founded Giorgio Armani S.p.A.

That quality is what makes Armani the undisputed master of understated elegance; it’s the true Italian craftsmanship that makes this brand the epitome of fine, well-made, sophisticated simplicity.

As well as understated basics, classic formal and workwear, Armani shows his design prowess with his more elaborate lines. Armani offers clothing for all aspects of life. What all Armani clothing has in common, is timeless elegance and grace.

Armani’s children’s range was launched in 1979, aimed at boys, girls and babies. Like the adult lines, Armani Junior has a sophisticated simplicity and perfect tailoring, for that trademark easygoing elegance. Armani is not led by passing trends, rather he sticks to classic colours, embellished with the bird motif. Designed with the young wearer in mind, the clothing is sensible, comfortable and made with mostly natural fabrics.
