The Sweetest Wedding Tradition

HISTORY & HERITAGE

Lilli´s Surprise

Lilli sat in the window seat, watching raindrops sliding down the glass. The weather didn’t bother her – she knew today was going to be exciting. Her favourite Aunt, Marie was coming to visit – and she had told Lilli she had a surprise for her.

Lilli hugged her knees, in their blue jeans. She traced a love-heart in the condensation on the window, and smiled. She loved surprises. What could it be?

Aunt Marie had already given her a surprise just two weeks ago, when she announced she was marrying Henry – soon to be Uncle Henry! Lilli was so excited about the wedding, and she couldn’t wait to travel to Italy for the wedding, and to see her aunt in her wedding dress.

Only one thing saddened her about the wedding. Her older sister, Helena was going to be an actual bridesmaid. Helena would get to wear a gorgeous dress, carry a bouquet of flowers and walk down the aisle, looking like a princess, while Lilli would have to watch, along with her parents and the other guests. Secretly, although she was happy for Helena, Lilli longed to be a bridesmaid too.

Before long, Aunt Marie´s little white car pulled up outside the house. Lilli jumped from the window and raced down to meet her, throwing herself into her aunt’s arms.

Her aunt laughed. “Ready to hear about your surprise?”

Lilli nodded eagerly.

“Alright, well, we’re going dress shopping,” smiled Aunt Marie. “After all, you need a new dress for my wedding. But not just any dress!”

“A special dress,” added Helena, turning around to smile at her younger sister.

Lilli sighed happily. Although she loved dress shopping, she still wished were a bridesmaid. She sat back and began picturing her dream dress – a princess gown with sparkling stones in her favourite colour, blue.

By the time they arrived in Düsseldorf it had stopped raining and brilliant sunshine was making the wet pavements sparkle. Tiny rainbows shimmered in the puddles and ducks bobbed along on the elegant river in Königsalle. Lilli’s heart jumped when she realised they were heading to her favourite shop, Barbara Frères.

They stepped inside, Lilli didn’t know where to go first. There were beautiful dresses everywhere and for a moment she just stopped and gazed. She reached out to touch a gown made of rose-coloured silk. Another dress sparkled with silver flowers, another with musical notes.

Lilli peered into a glass-topped cabinet. Inside, there were crystal hairclips and tiaras. She longed to try all of them.

“So many beautiful dresses,” said Aunt Marie, “but Lilli- a flower girl needs something extra special. Don’t you think?”

“What’s a flower girl?”

“Like a bridesmaid,” said Helena, “but better.”

And that was when Aunt Marie asked her.

“Lilli, would you like to be my flower girl?”

Lilli was stunned. Aunt Marie explained that a flower girl has a very important job in the wedding. Lilli would actually be the first to walk up the aisle – even before the bride! She would scatter flower petals and she would be in all the photographs by Aunt Marie and Uncle Henry.

And the best part? Because being a flower girl is so special, Lilli’s dress was going to be handmade in England – especially for her. Aunt Marie told her that the lady who would make Lilli’s dress had made dresses for real, live princesses.

Lilli helped choose the color of her very own princess dress. It was going to be ivory, with a silk bow around the middle. Aunt Marie said the bow could be in whichever color Lilli liked best! In Lilli´s case blue of course.

As she skimmed her fingers over the silky fabrics in a exquisite colors, feeling like she had become a mini dress designer for the day. In fact, perhaps one day she would become a designer of princess dresses…she began dreaming of her future studio in England.
