The Story of

Roberto Cavalli

DESIGNER DOSSIER · JANUARY 2018

The Story of Roberto Cavalli

From Impressionism to… Impressive Innovation

For fans of Cavalli, it will be obvious that art is in this man’s blood.

Roberto Cavalli was born in Italy, 1940 to a family of artists and creative types.  Roberto’s grandfather was an Impressionist painter and his mother, a seamstress. So the child grew up surrounded by art, textiles and fabrics; a combination that shaped his future.

Initially determined to follow in the footsteps of his artist grandfather, Cavalli enrolled in the Academy of Art in Florence. He decided that his talent for art could work well alongside his passion for textiles and fashion.

Signature Style

Extravagance Through Wild Prints and Cuts

Cavalli is an artist, with a show-stopping style signature that can be recognised instantly. The style is wild and extravagant, with recurring use of animal prints. Previous collections have featured floaty cuts and vibrant colours which combine to create a somewhat bohemian flair. The unique styles have become the favourites of many celebrities. Jennifer Lopez and Heidi Klum, for instance, count Roberto Cavalli’s creations among their favourite red carpet looks.

This season the collection has revolved around animal prints, gold and whites in wonderful striking combinations

Cavalli (Big) Cats!

This season at Cavalli, lions and tigers are out to play!

Along with prints of big cats and Cavalli’s signature animal prints, the designer has used a lot of gold which makes an unforgettable, playful combination. A key piece is an irresistible baby tuxedo romper, the epitome of fun luxury with a cheeky wink.

As ever, Cavalli’s selection for kids is utterly fun and playful. Parents who love the ‘Me Too’ trend will appreciate the lookalike prints, perfect for stepping out together as a coordinated pair!

Perfect For…

Kids who like their prints loud and wild. Fashion forward little lookalikes who want to match Mum and Dad.

Leather Revolution

He began with actualising some completely new thoughts about leather.

Before Cavalli, leather was practical and simple – and he took it to an artistic new level! In 1970, the young designer presented his first collection of printed leather pieces under his own name. Cavalli patented this innovative new technique.

A born innovator, Cavalli continuously thought up new ideas for textiles. In 1988 the brand presented its first printed jeans and six years later, introduced new ways with denim. Sand-blasted jeans were followed by stretch jeans, in collaboration with Lycra in 1995.

Over the years, the House of Cavalli expanded, adding more lines. In 1998 the house launched ‘Just Cavalli’, a youthful line aimed at younger adults, and Roberto Cavalli Junior, for kids.

When Roberto married his wife Eva, she became creative director of ‘Roberto Cavalli Collection.’ Cavalli himself has always been keenly involved in running his fashion house
