Glam Swans and Graffiti

Little Marc Jacobs hits the scene with a brand-new theme every season, this F/W we cannot get enough of the wacky sketches of a character named ‘Mr Marc’, graffiti prints and subtle glam-rock, metallic details. Girls are treated to a black, white and metallic swan theme which really captures the essence of Marc Jacobs… swans are associated with elegance and yet Jacobs’ swans, sporting star-shaped sunglasses and bow ties, definitely don’t bow down to typical rules! As ever, Marc Jacobs has produced a collection that is as wearable and practical for kids as it is modern.

The Story of Marc Jacobs

From Knitting with Grandma to Influencing Fashion’s Foundations…

There’s no doubt that Marc Jacobs, as a person is one of the world’s coolest and most influential people. So how did the American King of urban cool earn his crown?

A New York city boy through-and-through, Jacobs was raised by his grandmother on the Upper West Side. Jacobs’ grandmother brought him up – and taught him to knit. A fantastic early introduction to textiles, and his first foray into fashion.

His childhood environment can be seen throughout his collections to this day. It seems he has wanted to be a designer since early youth, so the schools he attended reflected this, including the High School of Art and Design and Parsons School of Design in New York. Jacobs kept scooping up awards during his studies. He showed his innate talent from an early age. While still at Parsons he even produced and sold his first collection, a range of sweaters.

Jacob’s career was no slow burn, it was more like a firework, forceful and enthralling. He started a working life at age 15 as a stockroom assistant at a boutique. Teaming up with his creative partner Robert Duffy he launched an original label, and in 1986 he set up Marc Jacobs. His first collection won the Perry Ellis Award – Marc Jacobs has always been a magnet for awards!

Opening up his first store in 1997 in -where else? – New York, Marc Jacobs was in high demand from the start and retail expansion happened fast, all over the world’s most fashionable cities.

Marc Jacobs also became the creative mind behind Louis Vuitton. He became known for twists on classics, reviving retro prints, colours and cuts, and daring to be different. He left after 16 years to devote his creativity to his own label.
