The Story of

Lanvin

DESIGNER DOSSIER · MAY 2017

Glorious

Lanvin’s signature is a feminine style, rich in intricate detailing. Think satin and grosgrain ribbon, crystals and beads – every piece is delicately accented with thoughtful, light and eye-catching details. The sumptuous fabrics used include silk taffeta, organza, tulle in pretty shades of pink, red and natural hues with black and dark blue.

Signature Style

Designer Alber Elbaz joined Lanvin in 2011. With him Lanvin revived his wonderful heritage, breathing new life into the brand and adding his creativity and modernity to the noble house. Elbaz built on Lanvin’s existing reputation for exquisite detailing and draping.

In 2016 Lanvin appointed a new artistic director, Bouchra Jarrar, a respected haute couture designer who grew up in Cannes. She is the first female designer since Jeanne Lanvin and a lifelong admirer of Lanvin’s couture legacy. Perfect cuts combine with a pink, white and navy palette that is classically and timelessly French.

Lanvin Petite

Lanvin’s dedicated childrenswear was launched in 2011, to great excitement from the industry. Elbaz wowed the industry with his beautiful debut collection for girls aged 4 – 10. He created a real tribute to the brand’s origins- joyful, feminine and luxurious. The line included shoes, and jewellery of pearls, crystals and ribbon, especially for little ladies. There were even matching outfits for the models’ dolls in the campaign! Lanvin Petite was well-received and later began creating lines for babies and boys, too.

The Story of Lanvin

Lanvin is a brand of beautiful, desirable clothes that was essentially inspired by a mother’s love for her child. Out of that love came something truly remarkable; the eponymous fashion house.

Jeanne Lanvin has been hailed as one of the most influential designers of the 1920s and 30s. This accolade is deserved as she is the founder of one of the world’s oldest fashion houses.

Her creative muse was her daughter. Lanvin shared a close relationship with her only child and she crafted beautiful clothes for her – different from anything else available at the time. The gifted seamstress and designer used trimmings, embroideries and beadwork that had never been seen before. Excitement and delight grew around the breath-taking designs, each time her daughter stepped out in a new creation. The streets of Paris became the child’s virtual catwalk, where she modelled her mother’s creations.

Soon, people were requesting the clothes – not only for their children but for themselves, too. Jeanne Lanvin opened a new boutique in Paris. Her clientele were some of the most famous and wealthiest people in Europe, and the Lanvin brand continued to grow. Soon, Lanvin had several more premises specialising variously in fur, menswear and lingerie. Lanvin also ventured successfully into fragrance.

Jeanne Lanvin made a significant contribution to fashion. After her death, the company was left to her daughter and inspiration. The company is no longer family owned, though Jeanne Lanvin’s legacy influences design to this day.

The Lanvin logo, a dancing mother and child, was designed from an image of Jeanne and her daughter.
