The Story of

Kenzo

DESIGNER DOSSIER · January 2017

Tigers and Flowers – Beauty and Power – East Meets West

Kenzo style has a distinct “East Meets West” vibe – the inspiration of Japan fused with Parisian couture. With Kenzo one will find fun graphics and prints, bright colours and the signature emblem of Kenzo, flowers. The jungle theme that made Kenzo famous at the beginning, prevails today. Tiger prints, flowers and stripes feature in many of Kenzo’s pieces.

The Story Of Kenzo

Japanese-French founder Kenzo Takada always had a passion for fashion, even when he was very young and would read his sister’s fashion magazines. He was sure the world of fashion had a place for him and sure enough, he truly had something special, unique and different to offer when he came on the scene.

Takada was born in Japan, and moved to fashion capital Paris in 1964 to start his fashion career. With single-minded determination he worked hard and he quickly developed a great reputation there. His Japanese-urban clothing was unlike anything else out there. His unique use of colour and print offered something totally fresh to the industry.

Kenzo’s first boutique, called ‘Jungle Jap’, was in Paris. The popular store, with a jungle-themed interior sold handmade, Asian-inspired womenswear.

There was nothing similar in Paris.

The unique pieces won many fans and the business continued to grow, into the Kenzo label we see today. In 1983, Kenzo began designing menswear and later, childrenswear. After that the company branched out farther still, into home interiors.

With a style that roams the globe for inspiration, Kenzo style is inspired by exotic destinations and the diverse vibrancy that the world has to offer.

Exotic tiger prints, geometric patterns and fearless use of colour epitomise the nomadic Kenzo style.

Kenzo Kids

Like the adult lines, Kenzo Kids is always fun and forever surprising. Colours and prints are the order of the day here. In Kenzo’s S/S2017 collections girls will find the beloved Tiger face on fresh pastels and boys can deck themselves in bold colored comic inspired prints cobined with jeans. This is an example of the atypical, playful style that epitomises Kenzo Kids.

Of course, just as in their adult offerings, tigers and flowers are regularly featured in Kenzo Kidswear. The clothing line is joy to wear for kids who are in love with colour.

Perfect For…

Fearless, outgoing kids who are in love with colour and like to stand out.

Kenzo Today

Since 1993, LVMH has owned the Kenzo label. Kenzo Takada retired in 1999 to focus on his personal art, and since 2011, fashion giants Humberto Leon and Carol Lim have been in post as Creative Directors and Head Designers of Kenzo. The two designers are inspired by Kenzo’s history and cultural heritage in their modern and futuristic designs.

Kenzo has continued to expand over the years, and is now well-known for fragrances and skincare in addition to fashion.

Today, Kenzo is an international luxury goods brand with a wealth of fashion-forward celebrity followers. Beyonce, Swizz Beatz and Selena Gomez have all been photographed wearing Kenzo, delighting their fans each time they step out in one of the brand’s creations.
