The Story of

Gucci

DESIGNER DOSSIER · JANUARY 2019

Gucci Kids

Just a few years ago, who of us would have imagined dressing their little ones in jeans with a bright embroidered snake slithering down the leg? Or combining a jeans jacket with patches to your daughters favourite sparkly gold dress? Thanks to Gucci, everything goes! …Given that you know how to combine seemingly clashing styles….

Gucci’s Heritage

From Luggage Boy to Luxury Luggage Master

In Paris, almost one hundred years ago, a young hotel worker had his first taste of luxury. Day by day he worked in beautiful city hotels, handling the extravagant luggage of the hotel guests. Marvelling at the materials, the craftsmanship, Guccio Gucci was impressed beyond words. Not only was the guests’ clothing so elegant, even their luggage was a thing of beauty. His appreciation for fine things grew.

An idea came to him. His home city of Florence had an ancient heritage of artisan craftsmanship. That the Florentine tradition could be applied to making luggage, even more wonderful than Gucci had seen, was an idea that drove him.

Realising his vision, the young man opened up a shop in Florence in 1920. Here he employed citizens of Florence, skilled in hand stitching. They made leather goods to rival anything Gucci had seen in Paris and London. The business gained strength and soon, it became necessary to use machine stitching – though the technique had modernised, Gucci never compromised his eye for detail, and sumptuous classic styling.

Soon Gucci had grown a family business, run by himself and his three sons Aldo, Vasco and Rodolfo. They threw open the doors to more shops – in Florence, Rome and Milan, the fashion heart of Italy.

Now Gucci hit his stride, finding his own style that was unique and coveted. With a virtuoso use of colour, he introduced a luxurious style in womenswear and accessories. Butterflies breezed over silks. Exotic animal prints roamed across handbags, and a new type of bamboo handle was developed. His iconic ornamented loafer became a symbol of quality and Italian style.

In wartime, Gucci weathered difficult times by adapting. During shortages of their usual fine leather, they created a cotton-canvas bag which was also popular due to the craftsmanship and the distinction of the double G logo. Following this period, in 1953 Gucci opened up their offices in New York City and continued to expand the business. Soon Gucci had won the hearts of distinguished clients from all over the world, from Hollywood to royalty.

Opposites Attract – The New Masterful Art of Combining What Seems Impossible

Gucci is one of the world’s most finest and most distinctive brands. An elegant combination of color, impeccable detail and classic Italian style, Gucci is the proud product of a 100-year history.

Its signature  “double G” logo is applied to each piece. Think of green and red, and the next thing after Christmas that pops into mind are Gucci’s unmistakable stripes.

Recently, Gucci has created an entirely new style, which is currently driving fashion fans crazy. But what seems to be haphazardly thrown together to some, is in fact a masterful art of combination – the rules of which only very few understand.

Gucci Today

Just four years ago, we were reading articles about Gucci’s struggle to remain a luxury brand in the perception of consumers as the Gucci logo-printed canvas handbag seemed to be the central element around which it was pinning its entire brand identity.

Luckily enough, Alessandro Michele came along and made a sensationally bold move. In 2015, Michele launched a new collection which divided the Gucci folk. Many did not understand the central theme around which the collection was organised… the genius lay in exactly this.

Today, those that understand how the juxtaposition of pieces in the collection come together in a special way to create one , whole masterpiece – mostly fashion bloggers – are seen by others – mostly their followers – as true fashion masters.

What that means for styling our children? We can have some great fun experimenting with looks!
