The Story of DKNY

Amidst the skyscrapers, yellow cabs and lush parks inspiration finds its beating heart, keeping pace with the rhythm of the one and only, the iconic New York City. DKNY is the all-American design powerhouse began in the 1980s and fast became one of the world’s fashion leaders.

Donna Karan is an American designer who was inspired by the diverse character of her home city, the Big Apple. Inspired by the fast pace, multi-culture and attitude of the place, DKNY stands for Donna Karan New York.

She launched her first womenswear collection in 1985. It was called ´Seven Easy Pieces´ and the concept was literally, seven pieces that could be combined in an endless variety of outfits. Donna Karan designed what she wanted to see, what she wanted to wear. The success of this first collection can hardly be overstated, and more lines quickly followed – DKNY, a younger, more affordable line in 1989, followed by menswear in 1991. Since then DKNY has been an unstoppable phenomenon and loved by the planet’s fashion leading stars.

DKNY is a more affordable diffusion of Donna Karan Collection, aimed at a younger audience. For the youngest fans there is DKNY Boys, DKNY Girls and even DKNY Baby.

This season, DKNY Kids is all about urban tones of grey, black and white, with stylishly simple cuts evoking the actual New York cityscape. Now the first word in what’s hot in New York, when Donna Karan New York speaks, the fashion world listens. That is why there are over seventy Donna Karan Collection and DKNY stores worldwide. Since 2005, DKNY has offered online shopping, too.

Edgy, urban-cool supermodel Cara Delevigne has, fittingly, been the face of DKNY for several seasons. In 2005 the model designed a capsule collection, DKNYXCARA. The Cara capsule featured her eyes, her lucky Roman Numeral, funny-sharp slogans in the style of Cara´s carefree humour and a colour palette of black and white dashed with lightning neon-yellow. The sporty street offerings fitted perfectly with DKNY´s  modern city style.
